Teen Age Drug Abuse

Teenagers face social challenges every day and one of the most common is the temptation for teen age drug abuse. Often teenagers don't think doing drugs is wrong, and they find it acceptable without realizing the impact it can have on them. This is troubling for society and especially for families.

What are the reasons for teen age drug abuse? Sometimes it is an escape, or to relieve stress, to relax, or even just to have fun. Many teen age drug abuse starts with wanting to fit in with their peers who are abusing drugs or out of curiosity. Teens are most likely to abuse drugs at parties and when they are with friends. We also know that teen age drug abuse often leads to sex. Add to that unplanned pregnancies and/or health risks.

You teen will be exposed to drugs, as most are. Research shows that the best way to prevent drug abuse by teens is to have a solid relationship with their parents who monitor their behavior. But, there are times when the best parenting falls short and teens succumb to drug abuse.
How can you tell if your teen is involved in teen age drug abuse?

Look your teen in the eyes - most drugs will affect how your teen looks. They may have bloodshot eyes or have a checked out look to them.

Notice the friends they are around and especially if they have drug problems.

Watch your teen's behavior for drastic changes - and notice if they become secretive and try to avoid you (more than usual).

Physical changes: extreme weight loss, losing a lot of hair, and other signs.

Alcohol is the most abused drug in our society. But there are many different ways to abuse drugs. There are steroids, over-the-counter medications (like cough syrup or inhalants), and even prescription medications such as pain pills. Then of course there are the illegal drugs like heroin, meth, cocaine, and marijuana.

Your teen's brain is still developing. Drug abuse can bring permanent physical changes. It can affect teens in all ways including their emotional health, and their behavior. Not only can teen age drug abuse be either a mask for or contribute to depression, will alter their ability to make good decisions and eventually they will put themselves in harmful situations.

Whatever drugs your teen is abusing, it may get to a level that you need a lot more intervention than you can provide. You'll need professional assistance. There are many programs available to help with teen age drug abuse. Look into the options until you find a treatment that will break your teenager of drug abuse.

Teen Crisis Intervention

If you are reading this page, you are a few steps ahead of a great many parents of troubled teens. You are out of denial. The country as a whole is coming to understand that if a teen crisis intervention plan or program isn't in place in schools and public institutions that the juggernauts of drug abuse, alcohol abuse and teen sexual exploitation will continue to crush the lives of America's youth.

Substance Abuse Statistics Tell the Tale

Teen crisis intervention is too grandiose a term you say? These statistics suggest teen crisis intervention is a necessary description for ongoing substance abuse among teens.

Between 1999 and 2000, the rate of past month marijuana use among women aged 12 and older increased from 3.1 percent to 3.5 percent...
Among youth aged 12 to 17 in 2000, 9.7 percent had used an illicit drug within the 30 days prior to interview
Approximately 2.1 million youths aged 12 to 17 had used inhalants at some time in their lives as of 2000. This constituted 8.9 percent of youths
About 9.7 million persons aged 12 to 20 reported drinking alcohol in the month prior to the survey interview in 2000 (27.5 percent of this age group). An estimated 6.6 million (18.7 percent) were binge drinkers and 2.1 million (6.0 percent) were heavy drinkers

Teen Crisis Intervention Comes in Many Forms

As you read these pages, we keep you informed of those public schools, states, towns and non-profits that acknowledge the need for teen crisis intervention by funding teen crisis intervention programs that address the at-risk teen, teens already in the legal system, and pre-teens who might be tempted.

The rise of the Internet only accelerates the need to develop interventions to prevent the at-risk teen from being seduced into dangerous and unsavory situations while right under their parent's roof.

If the dangers to teens ended with substance abuse it might be manageable, but drug abuse brings the subsets of teen pregnancies, rape, imprisonment, AIDS, and prostitution. Teen crisis intervention programs need to be implemented that take account of all of the destructive forces that can be unleashed if left unchecked.

Teen crisis intervention can simply mean that adults take back control of their teen's lives by battling the cultural forces that make drugs seem attractive to the troubled teen. Teen crisis interventions can only occur when parents quit denying a crisis exists.

ODD Must Be Recognized and Treated with Care

If your child is understood and treated according to his or her condition, the chances of better performance will increase and your child will have a chance at succeeding in life. If he or she is left to suffer in a regular academic environment, resentment and defiant behavior will take over in an effort to compensate for lack of scholastic ability.

Don't allow your child to suffer any more than he or she already has. Recognize that ODD makes life difficult for a child and help your child with his or her specific condition. By providing your child with a supportive and understanding environment, both in school and at home, you will be helping a great deal!

Camp For Troubled Teen

A camp for troubled teens can conjure up all kinds of images in a parents mind. The most negative of these images would be due to past incidents of bad publicity centered around irresponsibly run camps for troubled teens, unnecessarily making parents wary about any type of camp for troubled teens.

Which Camp for Troubled Teens Fits Your Teenager?

Though parents must use due diligence in researching various camps for troubled teens, be assured that a properly credentialed camp for troubled teens will be able to demonstrate the soundness of their programs and offer references and evidence of their effectiveness as a teen facility.

Through research, a parent will have developed a list of reputable camps for troubled teens. Other than a camp for troubled teens' reputation, a parent will want to choose a camp for troubled teens based on the particular needs of their at risk son or daughter.

If the troubled teen in question has demonstrated extreme behavioral problems and manifests tendencies that will lead to life devastating consequences, a parent might want to focus on a camp for troubled teens that leans to a more structured and militaristic approach to the training and programs that they employ.

Teens with pronounced discipline programs who have had little structure in their lives often find that ultimately, a camp for troubled teens that employs a strict code of discipline and a program that clearly provides boundaries will help their teen find their center and teach a teen the self-discipline necessary to succeed in life.

Different Troubled Teen Camps for Different teens

Alternatively, a parent of a troubled teen who is just demonstrating a rebellious attitude and a poor lack of judgment will look more closely at camps for troubled teens that emphasize developing social skills and programs that will help a teen work at issues of responsibility and respect.

A sound camp for a troubled teen will incorporate programs that will help the teen to develop leadership skills as well as teach the teen to be a team player, thus teaching valuable social skills of cooperation and mutual respect.

As a parent works with their troubled teen's therapist, they should be sure to include a camp for troubled teens as one of the options that they explore. A parent must look first, however, at who their teen is, the nature of their particular problems and choose a camp for a troubled teen that will most closely meet their teenager's needs.
